Birth certificate “scandal” brings out the racists

A huge number of freepers are “birthers”, or people that believe that President Obama is not an American citizen and therefore cannot legally be President. Another archiveed page of the Malia thread on Free Republic

There’s another Yahoo cache of a page from the Malia thread on Free Republic that started the recent uproar. Conveniently enough, this was provided by one of the few freepers actually principled enough to reject this kind of behavior. (There are a few.) As with the other post about this infamous thread, the offending posters will be noted with links to their registration date to avoid the transparently fake claim that these comments were “planted” by liberal trolls.

These posters registered in October 2008 (RedStateGuyTrappedinCT), June 2003 (OldExPat), January 2008 (manc, again), November 2008 (MissDairyGoodnessVT), March 2002 (chiefqc), March 2004 (Angry Capitalist), and October 2008 (luvEastTenn).

Jim Robinson, Free Republic’s owner, posted a thread republishing a private email he was sent by a presumably non-white woman upset over their collective insults towards Malia Obama. This, of course, is an invitation for additional comments by posters reinforcing the unwritten rule that racism and intolerance are welcome at Free Republic. These were all from one thread. There are a half-dozen currently up, at least, referencing this incident, all filled with the same kind of posts. Will Jim Robinson and his followers still claim this was all a result of liberal sockpuppet accounts? Why are these comments still available if they really “police” their own site and have “standards”?

A summary of the Malia Obama racism debacle on Free Republic

On July 9, 2009, Free Republic poster Sig Sauer P220 posted a thread about an article (with accompaning photo) titled “Miss Obama’s Peacenik T-Shirt Sends Message to G8 Leaders”. What occurred next – thread being pulled after negative attention, then restored, and then pulled again, Daily Kos diaries, a Vancouver Sun article and a 3-minute stint with David Shuster on MSNBC – all started with the racist and derogatory commentary directed at an 11 year old girl.

The first 50 posts are screencapped here. Here’s some selections.

Far from being fake accounts set up by liberals to make Free Republic look bad, the above posters joined in March 2009 (Tarpon), Jan 2008 (manc), March 2007 (Sig Sauer P220), May 2008 (patriot08), April 2009 (US Navy Vet), and October 2004 (Gay State Conservative).

This thread had hundreds of replies, some worse than the ones screencapped above. In the interest of providing evidence, however, I’ll only post the screencaps available and not the quotes of the other comments for which no screencaps exist.

This thread – and the fallout – is also the reason that this blog exists. Screencapping these kinds of comments will provide ongoing evidence for the kind of attitude encouraged and nurtured at Free Republic – an attitude of paranoia, racism, and hate.
